SourDough Bread


A very tasty sourdough bread. I have shared this bread and recipe with people
all over the neighbor hood and they keep coming back for more.

1 C Starter 1/2 C White sugar
1/2 C Warm water 1 4 oz. pk. active yeast
1 1/2 tsp Salt 1/2 C Cooking oil
6 cups general purpose flour



The yeast is optional, depending on strength of starter and length of time for rise.
A weak starter may take up to 12 hours to double. The yeast will double in about four
If using yeast, dissolve in 1/4 cup warm water. Reduce other water by 1/4 cup. Mix all
ingredients except flour in large bowl.After sugar is melted, add flour, either manually
or in electric mixer. When all elements are completely mixed, place sponge in large bowl
greased with 2 tbsp. cooking oil. Rotate sponge to grease all sudes. Cover and place
in wark spot torise until doubled.

Once doubled remove from bowl and knead for ten minuted. Add flour if necessary to
prevent sticking. After kneading, divide ibti two equal loaves. Plae in 4"x8" greased bread
pans. Cover, place in warm spot and allow to double - about two hours. Preheat oven to
350 deg.and bake for 40 - 50 minutes or until golden brown. Loaves should sound
hollow when thumped. Turn out on rack to cool before slicing.
