Place onion and brats in saucepan or deep skillet large enough to hold brats without
crowding. Brats may be either pre-cooked or raw.Pour in beer to cover brats. Cook over
medium heat for 20 minutes. bringing liquid only to an occasional bubble. Do not boil.
Remove brats to plate. Drain onions, discarding beer. Form a griddle of aluminum foil.
Prepare medium hot fire on grill. A large bed of coals is not required. When coals are
grayed, place onions on grill over coals. Place brats on grill to side of coals. Don't
let onions burn. Turn brats every minute or two so that they just brown. Do not let skin
split. When browned, remove brats and onions to serving dishes. Serve on large hot dog
buns with plenty of mustard, ketchup and relish.
