Missouri Biscuits

These may be the best biscuits you have ever had. Everybody
who has tried them have had nothing but raves.
1/2 cup sourdough starter 1 c milk
2 1/2 c flour 1/3 c shortening
1 tbsp sugar 3/4 tsp salt
2 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp creme de mente
Make batter of the starter, milk, and 1 cup of flour.
Set in warm place to rise. It will get very light and bubbly. When ready, sift
together the remaining flour and other dry ingredients, except the baking soda.
Work in the shortening with fingers. Dissolve the soda in a little water and add
to sponge. Add dry ingredients to sponge and mix to a soft dough. Knead a bit to get
in shape, then roll out to about 1/2 inch thick:cut with biscuit cutter. Place on
greased cookie tin, turning to grease tops. Cover and set in warm place to rise for about
45 minutes. Bake in 350 deg. oven for 30 to 35 mibutes, or untill nicely browned.
Prepare sponge the night before for breakfast serving, or about noon for dinnertime.
